Title: Dead Stars 

Author: Paz Marques Benitez

Author's Background: Paz Marquez Benitez (1894-1983) only had one more published short story after “Dead Stars.” Nevertheless, she made her mark in Philippine literature because her work is considered the first modern Philippine short story.



Vocabulary:

concreteness -  is an aspect of communication that means being specific, definite, and vivid rather than vague and general.

tranquil - free from disturbance; calm.

azotea - a flat roof or platform on the top of a house or other building.

puttering - occupy oneself in a desultory but pleasant way.

nasally - by inhaling through the nose

contempt - the feeling that a person or a thing is worthless or beneath consideration. 

perfervid - intense and impassioned.

glorification - the action of describing or representing something as admirable, especially unjustifiably. 


monotonies - lack of variety and interest; tedious repetition and routine.


wistful - having or showing a feeling of vague or regretful longing. 

star-studded - (of the night sky) filled with stars.

obstinately - firmly or stubbornly adhering to one's purpose, opinion, etc.; not yielding to argument, persuasion, or entreaty.


immutable - unchanging over time or unable to be changed.


Characters:

Alfredo Salazar - son of Don Julian. And he is engages to Esperanza.

Esperanza - wife of Aldredo.

Julia - The other woman of Aldredo.

Don Julian - The father of Alfredo.


Judge Del Valle - Brother- in law of julia.

Setting: Santa Cruz

Exposition: Don Julian's house  carmen was asking about alfredo and Esperanza. and the story goes on and Alfredo meets julian.

Rising Action: It starts when he gone neighboring with his father to Judge Del Valle's house then Alfredo met Julia. Then he realized he still has feelings towards her. 

Climax: It is when Julia found out Alfredo's Wedding and she congratulated him.

Falling Action: The wedding happen and he chose not to break his word a few years later he comesback to town where julia lives.

Ending: Alfredo felt sadness and how he felt for julia in the past.

Symbolism: The symbolism of the story for me is Dead Stars. Dead Stars symbolizes our dreams, feelings. Like Alfredo's dream romance with Julia

Theme: The theme of the story for me is love.

Lesson: Be true to your feelings.

A Night In The Hills Title : A Night In The Hills Author : Paz Márquez – Benítez Author’s Background :  Born in 1894 in Lucena, Tayabas (now Quezon). Marquez – Benítez authored the first Filipino modern English language short story, Dead Stars, published in the Philippine Herald in 1925. Born into the prominent Marquez family of Quezon province, she was among the first generation of Filipino people trained in the American education system which used English as the medium of instruction. She graduated high school in Tayabas High School now, Quezon National High School. She was a member of the first freshman class of the University of the Philippines, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1912.
