Author Background: Jose Garcia Villa was a Filipino poet, literary critic, short story writer, and painter. He was awarded the National Artist of the Philippines title for literature in 1973, as well as the Guggenheim Fellowship in creative writing by Conrad Aiken.

Vocabulary:

climacteric - a critical period or event.
burrow - a hole or tunnel dug by a small animal, especially a rabbit, as a dwelling.
insolent - showing a rude and arrogant, lack of respect.
virility - The quality of having strength , energy, and a strong sex drive; manliness.
cursorily - to be hasty, quick to go over something.
invigorating -  Making one feel so strong.
begrimed - blacken with ingrained dirt. healthy, and full of energy.
obliquely - not in a direct way; indirectly.
beckon - make a gesture with the hand, arm, or head to encourage or instruct someone to approach or follow.

Characters:

Dodong - The young main character who is in love with Teang and wants to marry her.
Teang - Dodong's wife who gave birth to 6 children.
Dodong's Father - the father of Dodong whom he approached for support.

Dodong's Mother - the mother of Dodong which helped Teang to give birth and support dodong.
Blas - Dodong's first son and his in love with tonia.
Tonia - the Lover of blas.
Lucio - the other suitor of Teang and is 9 years older than Dodong.

Setting: Farm

Exposition: Dodong goes to his father and ask he wants to marry teang and ask his permission.

Rising Action : Dodong's father  grant his son's wish and allowed them to be married.

Climax: His son Blast ask his father that he wanted to marry tonia.

Falling Action: Teang regretted being married at an early age and ask herself if she married Lucio she would have the same life. Then Dodong realize the hardships of marrying such an young age.

Ending: Dodong feels sad and sorry for his son.Because he doesn't want his son to marry tonia in such a young age.

Symbolism: Footnote To Youth symbolizes the hardships  and struggles of early marriage.

Theme: Decision Making making good decisions will help you to lead the life you want.

Lesson: The moral of the story is that marriage is something that is taken seriously. Marriage in a very young age will give you more problems. And think twice before marrying.

A Night In The Hills Title : A Night In The Hills Author : Paz Márquez – Benítez Author’s Background :  Born in 1894 in Lucena, Tayabas (now Quezon). Marquez – Benítez authored the first Filipino modern English language short story, Dead Stars, published in the Philippine Herald in 1925. Born into the prominent Marquez family of Quezon province, she was among the first generation of Filipino people trained in the American education system which used English as the medium of instruction. Title: Dead Stars  Author: Paz Marques Benitez Author's Background: Paz Marquez Benitez (1894-1983) only had one more published short story after “Dead Stars.” Nevertheless, she made her mark in Philippine literature because her work is considered the first modern Philippine short story.
