Author's Background: Ilocano writer in English. Born in Barrio Nagrebcam in Bauang,La Union on June 17, 1911. Known for his widely Anthologized short story "How my Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife," which won first prize in the Commonwealth Literary Contest in 1940.

Vocabulary:

daintily - in an attractive, careful way, especially used about something small or having small movements.

Noel/Leon - Older brother of Baldo, Maria's Husband.

Baldo - Noel/Leon younger brother, Narrator.

Maria - Leon's Beautiful Wife.

Father and Mother - Mother and Father of Leon and Baldo.


Setting: Nagrebcan, La Union

Exposition: Baldo saw Maria Stepped down on Ca Celin's carretela and described her appearance. And He narrates their journey.

Rising Action: Maria is afraid because she thinks that Leon's family won't accept her. 

Climax: When they got home Leon's Family Talk to Maria.

Falling Action: Baldo Talk to his father about what happen when they're travelling .

Ending: Baldo looked at Maria And described her then baldo went out and said Maria smelled like a morning papayas are in  bloom.

Symbolism: The symbolism in this story is the road. the journey they went through the road also symbolizes struggles hardship, obstacles and adventure.

Theme: The theme of the story is journey our struffles, hardship and  obstacles in life.

Lesson: The lesson of the story is social status is not a hindrance if you trule love each other.

Marquez – Benítez authored the first Filipino modern English language short story, Dead Stars, published in the Philippine Herald in 1925.
